Chicken Spinach Casserole

Hello reader,

Simple recipe and quick preparation make this a worthwhile change of pace, you’ll certainly want to go heavy with the garlic to make it like mine.

You’ll need:

  1. 1 box Velveta Shells and cheese or comparable mac & cheese with the cheese packets rather than the dry mix sauce.
  2. Makaronilaatikko

“Makaronilaatikko” by Suvi Korhonen – Own work. Licensed under CC BY 2.5 via Wikimedia Commons – http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Makaronilaatikko.jpg#mediaviewer/File:Makaronilaatikko.jpg

    1 can spinach

  3. 4 cloves garlic minced or 4 teaspoons minced garlic
  4. Oyster crackers (Half a cereal bowl approximately)
  5. Shredded Cheddar Cheese or comparable shredded cheese.
  6. Parmeasean cheese
  7. Can of chicken or boiled chicken (whichever way you prefer)
  8. 1/3 cup olive oil
  9. 2Tbsps Black Pepper
  10. 6 Tbsps Oregano

Boil noodles like usual, and in the casserole dish unceremoniously combine the chicken, spinach, garlic, and pepper, as well as 3 Tbsps of the oregano. You may also add the olive oil at this point or wait and add it with the noodles.

Crush the oyster crackers to crumbs and add the parmesean and the other 3 Tbsps of oregano, this will be added overto of the casserole and then covered with the cheddar (or preferred) cheese.

Mix the boiled noodles to your other ingredients and be sure to break up the spinach adequately as well as the garlic, add the oil if you haven’t already. (Also yes use the cheese sauce in the noodly mixture because that stuff is pretty good at holding it together!)

Cover with the crumbs and cheese and pop into an oven preheated to 450 for roughly 35 minutes or until the topping looks dark around the edges and melted thoroughly on top.

Enjoy!

Windows 10 Tech Preview

Installing drivers in Windows 10 Tech Preview

Hello reader,

Depending on the age of your computer you may find it helpful to install graphics drivers, network drivers, sound drivers, or other drivers depending upon the performance of your computer at the time of installation.

By default Windows 10 Technical Preview comes with basic display drivers at a minimum, which while not adequate for gaming are certainly adequate for many users needs.

You’ll need;Windows 10

  1. Working internet
  2. Computer capable of downloads
  3. Product number of your machine
  4. Driver type (provided by your computers manufacturer)
  5. USB Drive

For internet drivers if your computer didn’t go online by itself at boot up, you may try refreshing the machine under PC settings. If that doesn’t make the machine internet capable you can try your manufacturers internet drivers which should consist of ethernet drivers, network adaptor drivers, wifi drivers (if applicable) and wireless lan drivers at a minimum.

Transfer the drivers to your non internet capable machine using a usb drive and extract the contents of the folders to run setup. In most cases the driver setup wizard will guide you through the installation but you may need to reboot or turn the wifi off and back on to get the driver recognized.

Graphics and other drivers… Depending on the age of the pc you may find compatibility issues with certain drivers i.e. Nvidia GPU drivers for XP etc, in many cases there are driver alternatives available but in some cases (rarely) they can make your machine unstable.

If all else fails for drivers try 3dp and be careful during the install (decine special offers etc.)

You may find it easier to take the PC to the manufacturer website but you’ll need to manually install drivers as Windows 10 Technical Preview isn’t a recognized software yet, meaning they won’t have exact driver matching in most cases. (Most Windows 7 – 8.1 compatible drivers work great) Many of the Vista Drivers work well, XP drivers are very hit or miss though I suspect this will be resolved sooner than later considering how many XP era machines are still in use today.

Primarily you’ll need to install netork & wifi drivers if you find something missing or graphics drivers to play games. I had the least amount of difficulty installing drivers for AMD, ATI, Intel, Realtek, and had some difficulty with Nvidia GPU drivers in particular for older Dell systems so as usual be careful and check to see what steps might be needed to upgrade to a comparable software i.e. Windows 8.1 before you begin.

To install Windows 10 Technical Preview you’ll need a copy of the ISO provided by Microsoft and a third party USB installer like rufus, after downloading the Windows 10 Technical Preview (32 or 64 bit depending on your machine and preference) insert a usb thumbdrive with nothing on it into the 2.0 or 3.0 usb port and then run Rufus, in the options provided you’ll see next to the words “free dos” a tiny iso image and the word browse. Browse to the download location of the Windows ISO (using rufus-browse option) and select it.

Execute the program and it will install the windows iso to the usb.

*See Also Difficult Driver Article Here.

Safely remove the usb and insert it into the machine you’ll be installing Windows 10 to, and boot from usb by using the bios options. (To access bios options simply press F10 or F12 on most systems during the first moments of startup, before you see the operating system load.

Once you see “Press any button to boot from USB…” You’ll have done it correctly. From there the installer will take a while, do not remove the installer until you have completely installed the Windows 10 Preview which will go on through several reboots and a few setup screens. In fact don’t remove the installer until the first time you have been online and downloaded something.

(Like antivirus software.)

On a personal note I have enjoyed this operating system immensely, it is my hope that it will be a free release as the store coupled with the enterprise market and other microsoft products will flourish provided nobody has to pay for this OS.

Not to say it isn’t valuable, but buying another operating system would stop me from buying any apps, or additional software. I know many people who feel the same way, all of those people are developers, customers, testers, and have been paying since Dos…

Just one of the many reasons we love Linux.

Some of the best holiday deals

Hello reader,

While I am writing this on Black Friday we have been watching for some of the best deals throughout the holiday season and depending upon who you are buying gifts for, there are several suggestions that might be worth a look.

Samsung came out with some extraordinary Black Friday deals including a $1 S-5, and throughout the rest of the shopping season they’re hinting at other extraordinary savings. Check their website for more details.

HP is offering up to 50% off today and possibly throughout the week if they see enough traffic and they do have some nice offerings on their website as well.

Kohls is offering $15 Dollars cash for every $50 spent today and they have a few really nice deals depending on your location. Their website is here.

Amazon launched the 8 days of Black Friday and they have marked down games as much as 67% among many other scattered specials and discounts throughout the site.

(Don’t forget to grab some of my books while you are there!) Many of the paperbacks would make great gifts and when you buy one you often get a reduced price for the kindle title as well.

Some of these deals are even featured on the news.

In any even happy hunting and Happy Holidays!

Windows 10 Technical Preview

Hello reader,

While it’s no secret that I prefer the Linux operating system, I recently started a series about Windows entitled “Patch or Smash Windows XP” and thought that this would make an excellent follow up.

Many Windows users have extremely strong preferences for specific distributions and XP’s following was no exception, in fact it was the rule. So as the rumors circulate that XP, Vista, and 7, users will be asked to switch over to 10 (possibly for free) my curiosity was piqued. Windows 10 Technical Preview

I spent 6 weeks on Windows XP comparing it to other Windows and Linux just to get familiar enough with everything to write an honest comparative between them and honestly I wasn’t surprised to see a properly formatted and *configured XP system with service pack 3 outperform many other configurations of both Vista, and 7.

*Properly configured meaning every service pack, updated runtimes, correct versions of vc basic runtimes, Direct X updates, .net frameworks, etc etc.

Please note that Vista and 7 when *configured correctly, and particularly with the right service packs, each had performance advantages over XP though they weren’t particularly noticeable aside from start ups and shutdowns.

In every case so far 32 bit systems outperform 64 bit systems, even on 64 bit machines with proper bios updates.Windows 10

We mostly use games and image manipulation software to do comparisons and the results aren’t different enough to warrant mention.

Windows 8

My experience with Windows 8 was shorter (2 weeks) due to the compatibility issues and driver issues that many users are facing and that aside I was more impressed with 8.1 and that sets us up for 10.

Windows 10 Technical Preview is definitely the best so far. At least it “will be” if the legacy drivers become compatible. Ideally computers from the XP era will be particularly prone to this need for drivers that can enable everything from: network cards, to gaming graphics, within a computers performance range.

Microsoft Hat

Special Thanks To Debra For The Hat! 🙂

I’m currently using Windows 10 Technical Preview in dual boot with Linux Mint 17 (Which took some doing incidentally, FYI turn off fast boot/enable legacy boot or grub2 vanishes) and they are fairly comparable performance wise, the new Windows features seem appealing enough to bring in more users by far.

The integrated apps run smoothly enough and in many ways the UI is reminiscent of Cinnamon/Mate while the app store is reminiscent of Android. The inclusion of multiple virtual desktops is very Linux-esque, and many of the other features are comparably sleek and stylish.

You will certainly want to remember the little things like .net framework and so on may be needed to run your older programs.

I may need to reinstall XP somewhere to finish Black Mesa due to no accelerated graphics driver being available yet, but in the meanwhile I am definitely enjoying the new OS. *See my article entitled installing difficult drivers!

How they compared best to worst:Windows 10 Tech Preview

  • 10
  • 7
  • XP
  • 8.1
  • Vista
  • 8

How they compare to Linux…  User prejudice but I think that depending on the user’s experience, Windows can be slightly less frustrating or 100 times more frustrating so generally I prefer Linux. I use Windows for games mostly but have found myself using it more with this recent release.

To get a copy on to a machine you’ll need the iso and a tool like rufus. To install it you’ll burn the iso to a usb stick using rufus and boot from that usb by interrupting the start up process on your computer with F10 or whatever your computer uses to access the boot menu.

It helps to have a *Microsoft Account, and I’d suggest trying it out in virtual box before you go too far and install it on 3 machines etc, the drivers aren’t a huge issue but you’ll notice it eventually. Have a backup OS for heavy lifting until the drivers you need are available.

Some drivers may install using compatibility settings but many in fact just refuse flatly to even try. I suspect that every driver needs a “sure go ahead and we’re not liable” disclaimer and a beta legacy driver installer.

*Access more features

How to tether a phone to wi-fi or broadband connect…

Generally on Android phones (and some tablets) there are settings listed under “more settings” from the home screen press the settings icon and find that tab. Under it you’ll see Mobile connect and possibly if you are lucky a usb tethering option that lets you use the phone as a usb wi-fi connection.

*This was not a paid endorsement and my views are my own Microsoft and Windows 10 are Trademarked and Copyrighted and we are in no way affiliated with them at the time of this publication.

I’ll go ahead and predict that if this operating system is free to us, it will succeed. The apps marketplace has potential, that said if they charge for this operating system as well as the apps…

Extinction seems likely no matter how good this OS is.

This is a golden opportunity to bounce back from Windows 8 in the public’s mind. I for one hope they adopt a more Linux-esque “app driven only” sales model.

I’d sooner buy an app than another OS.

What I am grateful for this year

Hello reader, Profile

It’s nearly Thanksgiving and time to count our many blessings. This past years has been quite interesting in that it has presented many of us with unique challenges.

The first thing I am grateful for is the support of my Family, and my Debra. During this past year my son has had quite a few challenges and he has faced many of them in ways that have made me very proud.

He has a long way to go to find the path of least resistance but I am confident that he’ll figure it out.

In our efforts to adapt to the changes in our lives we have each shown progressive patience and understanding wherever we were able.

My grandparents are doing better than before health wise and this is among the many blessings I count.

My cat is happy and crazy, this is good so I am thankful.

Linux because it’s a world that responds to my input.

Windows because I have a few games that I just refuse to outgrow.

My fans and especially the fans of my books and writing because you only get to be understood by people who take the time to show the interest in others. Those are the people who make others matter.

I am grateful for so many things, and for those who took the time to read this.

Namaste and Happy Holidays!

Linux

Linux for Businesses

Among the questions I am asked more regularly by non Linux users looking to make the switch, “Which Linux distribution would work best for my business?”

This of course is a question that requires a deeper understanding of what that particular business does and therefore needs. Generally businesses fall in to several categories that might have very specific needs but to create an overview I’ll focus on several business types and address the question from there.Linux

Most established offices that still rely heavily on internal email, heavy security, and typical office software will probably favor either Debian, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or possibly Fedora. These all come in a stable branch of software that relies heavily on an administrator to allow or deny changes made to critical parts of the system and is fairly no-frills.

Debian also comes in a slightly more current branch and has many practical applications available in the software center.

Most current businesses that have more modern needs might do well to steer towards something in the Ubuntu branch of Linux distributions, either a Ubuntu variant like Linux Mint, or possibly even Elementary OS, both of which have user friendly interfaces, are fast and very reliable.

Truthfully you can tailor most Linux distributions to do what the others can do so think of most of these as just good starting points. I’ve used Crunchbang Linux as a staring point for a few projects, i.e. personal computers for friends.

If you intend to do video conferencing and banking be sure to use the security enhancements offered in the software center as well as the security options offered during installation.

For 100% security centric businesses there are several Linux distributions that can be beneficial to have in the office, from Kali Linux, to Backbox, to Caine and even Tails which with the proper configuration offers near anonymity online. (Ideal for online banking etc.)

Most distributions of Linux allow a great deal of customization from the scale of the system to the desktop environments that will be used by the user of any given machine. I’ve deployed Linux in environments as small as 5Gb and as large as 2 Tb and found that in either extreme the  resulting system was quite stable.

Ram and processor speed should be a major factor in your decision. A single core processor with less than 3Gb of Ram will still run many Linux distributions but will not be ideal for the more resource heavy desktops.

Desktops and system requirements here.

If you run a small business like a shop with 4 computers you’ll find any of the Ubuntu variants adequate and comfortable to use. If you run a larger operation with warehouses and you need to keep in contact with other locations in real time etc, you’ll still probably be safe using a Ubuntu based OS, but could also find Red Hat Enterprise a suitable workhorse.

What tends to be ideal…

Breaking the topography of your business in to stations that can be networked efficiently solves the problem of one size fits all when it comes to Linux. You can realistically have every sort of distribution under one roof if you have a business that can make use of all the strengths and weaknesses of all the given Linux distributions.

If you had 4 floors of a building and had a network consisting of a mail room, (Red Hat or Debian) a marketing department (Mint or Ubuntu) an ordering center (Security enhanced Red Hat or similar) and a warehouse (Elementary OS) you would have an ideal setup.

You’ll do well to look into which open source software can fill your needs for any business aspect that you currently rely on as most if not all of the current software available can be found by searching on either OSALT, GitHub, or throughout the Linux forums.

The Ultimate Cranberry Side Dish

Hello reader,

I make no apologies for the hype, after a few years in culinary arts my taste in food is pretty highly tuned and as a foodie I can say without a doubt that this is in fact THE ULTIMATE CRANBERRY SIDE DISH.

Cranberry_bog

“Cranberry bog” by Photo by Keith Weller – Image Number K4414-14 ( http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/k4414-14.htm ). Licensed under Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons – http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cranberry_bog.jpg#mediaviewer/File:Cranberry_bog.jpg

All caps because I’m basically yelling it.

You’ll need:

  • one can whole berry cranberry sauce
  • one can crushed pineapple
  • 2 packs cherry gelatin or Jello* (trademarked product)
  • 1 tub sourcream
  • 1 tub whipped cream

Obviously you’ll need to make the cranberry sauce up to 2 days prior if you want this to be on the Thanksgiving table or the night before if you get it really cold. (freeze 2 hours then move to fridge)

Basically you just follow the gelatin directions adding just a bit less water, then dump in the cranberry sauce, the pineapples, and the sour cream. After about ten minutes of stirring you add the sour cream and whipped cream and look for a fairly thick consistency.

What’s nice about this recipe is you can vary the amounts easily enough to get a very specific consistency that can range from thick like marshmallow, to thinner like Watergate salad.

Enjoy and have an awesome Thanksgiving!

BroadedNet & AtContent

AtContent & BroadedNet

In the world of WordPress apps there are countless useful plugins that can make a website unique and today I’ll be going over two that I use for marketing and syndication.

Bear in mind these are ways to potentially make some money through your website so while this may not be fascinating it is potentially useful.

AtContent By AtContent, IFFace, Inc. is a behind the scenes network of bloggers who’s posts are available for re-posting on your site, and lists your articles for re-posting on others.

The advantages of this are;

  • When you have a great article it goes to many sites instead of just your own.
  • Likewise your page views are increased as bloggers read your articles deciding whether or not they’ll re-post them.
  • The option of posting guest blogs to your site without the need to approach other bloggers.

This last option is more relevant to businesses who traditionally might even offer to pay for guest posts. Now small businesses could just as easily feature content from other article writers without any negotiations.

Depending on the type of article you write, i.e. Product Blogs, Blogs with affiliate marketing codes built in, etc this could expand your wallet as well as your readership.

BroadedNet By Enstine Muki does something similar but for marketing purposes.

  • It allows you to create banners or related links and put them up for syndication through other sites.

So far my book links and banners have gone to at least a few other sites, and there are paid and free options for this service.

Both of these plugins offer monetization options, and BroadedNet offers a widget for showing the links others are sharing out.

Both are available for free through the plugin section of your WordPress website.

Because it's crazy

Ripped out of recent headlines and from similarly syndicated news sources:

3 out of 4 slaughtered Rabbi’s were American, Obamacare, terrorism, mosque style turret on the freedom tower erected to replace the twin towers, Isis, Nancy Pelosi, Suicide epidemic in Utah, Bill Cosby accused of Rape, the more of this stuff you read the more obvious it becomes.

A few weeks ago I was watching as college students were talking about how much worse Americans are than terrorists, and it wasn’t that long ago that I was laughing at the notion of GMO’s giving us all giant tumors.

The truth might be mixed in to all of the nonsense that gets pumped down our throats as the days and weeks turn into months and years but the question will always be “why are we hearing any of it?”

Ladies and gentlemen the grand puppet show. Not that many years ago our country sat listening in earnest as the media reported at least some things truthfully, and added some drama to the reports that needed punctuation. It was simpler in the 80’s as we were kept pretty much in the dark about most of the ridiculous but true things that were actually happening.

Was it better?

No it decidedly wasn’t better but in many ways it was easier to spot the frauds, they were at the end of the supermarket checkout lane with photo shopped images of extraterrestrials shaking hands with former presidents and women in Alabama giving birth to giant squids.

These days the frauds are more pervasive and far more daring. We get full coverage of completely invented news and if politics has anything to do with it we get it from 20 sources and are more likely to believe it than not. However does that even mean anything we are shown is real?

History reminds us that most of the headlines from a decade ago were proven untrue by as few as 3 years later. The stuff that turned out to be true was neither sensational nor was it really interesting.

News isn’t usually very interesting, you knew this as children, you waited for it to be over so that you could watch something interesting.

Sadly even the documentaries are starting to follow the pattern of “Just make it interesting, nobody cares if it’s true.” and we can honestly blame Hollywood and found footage films for some of that trend.

We seem to prefer to “make believe” something might be true, and then use that belief to search for more supportive documentation.

The problem is that isn’t actually very healthy, I mean mentally that isn’t conducive to health.

The media is supporting racism, sexism, political agendas, fear, division, hatred, all in the name of money. Don’t get me wrong we like money, we all like money.

Why would we hear about a 90 year old veteran being arrested for feeding the homeless? It might have happened, hell with the current state of things it certainly happened, but who does that serve?

It serves as a stark contrast from the notion of living in a country that is safer because of the police and lawmakers in it. Let’s not forget that for every half wit cop who might be tempted to be an asshole and make such an arrest, there are at least a few that would probably have coughed up a few dollars to help feed the same people.

I’m 100% certain that we only hear some of this stuff “because it’s crazy” and always wondering who the rest of it serves. In my experience the news is only a thermometer, knowing what topics are driving commentary out here tells me volumes about which fears sell more content.

If I really wanted to make this article go viral I could just add Isis, Obama, Injustice, or some similar controversial word to the title. If I threw the word rape in there it would get more views, and if I threw the word warning it would get even more.

That may be an SEO tip, but it’s truly a sad state of things. I think we all want to see more justice than injustice, so what purpose could bringing this to your attention serve?

Maybe you hesitate before the next frightened click?

Even if you don’t you deserve the option of skepticism.

Namaste and thanks for reading this.

Taoism

Up or Down

Hello reader,

In recent times I recall saying a bit about laying one building block a day towards what you really wanted to build during your lifetime. Something akin to “your whole kingdom might be too big from where you are standing, but one block is doable.”

I can’t help but think I’d be remiss if I didn’t apply the inverse of that thinking as well. In other words, “Whatever might be in your way, take it down one piece at a time.”

You might feel sometimes like you are sitting in a field waiting for a shovel to dig with… Dig without it till you get it. You might wait forever for the vehicle that only needs to take you somewhere within walking distance.

This world can tangle you up in stress, you need to know how to untangle.

Buddha called this world a wheel of suffering, and implied that everything we do gets us wrapped up in the drama. He was partly correct, and partly missing the punchline. “We can engage the world in ways that don’t end badly.”

That really is what self mastery is about and that is why it seemed prudent to mention more “little ways” to build towards or away from what seems overwhelming.

For example;

  • Stress in dealing with others, hold your idea of who you are trying to be, and don’t bother resisting what others think. The less you present for others to pick at the less drama unfolds. Choose your words carefully.
  • Stress in dealing with yourself, be patient as you remind yourself what you want to accomplish. Hold on to the idea of being happy as you remember that only you decide what that entails. Choose your goals and beliefs carefully.

People will present you with enormous problems, life will do so as well… Whether you find yourself building a solution or tearing down a problem just remember to only do what you can manage at each step.

Faith is not only knowing that problems often solve themselves, but also knowing that your role in your life is only as big or as small as your attention allows it to be.

You can be told that something is wrong, and just depending on how the person tells you it can be horrifying or it can be such a simple small thing.

Try to remember that part most of all.

Mindfulness entails thinking in that way, remembering that how a situation is presented can be as big or as small as the look on the face of the person saying what is actually happening.

Build something amazing, tear down what doesn’t work, and for the love of all things fluffy don’t make so much ado about nothing that others come to question the relevance of the news you bring them.

Sometimes the kitchen is actually on fire, sometimes it’s just some burnt toast, either way there is a correct reaction that isn’t even related to panicking.

Up or down, your mood only moves depending on how you look at things.

Namaste and thanks for reading this!
